Rerelease

It’s May the Fourth and as decided proof that it’s gone from being an informal pun day to a bit of corporate branding, The Phantom Menace got rereleased in cinemas this weekend. I, being the Star Wars trash that I am, am going to see it tomorrow. Because I will rally against the commodification of everything by our corporate overlords, but I will also relish any chance to see a Star War on the big screen.

Especially The Phantom Menace. It’ll forever hold a dear place in my heart, the way seeing a movie when you’re eight does. The sort of movie that fueled your imagination for years and you play the games and you read the books and play pretend during recess and get the Lego sets. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to recognize the movie’s many flaws. And yet, despite that, it’s still one I love. Guess there’s no accounting for bad taste.

Plus, I’m someone who likes going to the cinema. I like the big screen and the good sound, the social pact that we’re gonna all pay attention to the movie. This is a movie I’ve seen countless times, but it’s one that I’m looking forwards to getting to see again, fully knowing I’m gonna nerd out through the duel of the fates. Star War is one of those stories that I really like, and any excuse to dive into it, especially in a special way like this after what’s been a long and busy week, is one I’ll take.

Because again: Star Wars.
